Promotion & Assessment Policy

As per NEP 2020
Jnan Jyoti Educational Institution

At Jnan Jyoti, we embrace the vision of the National Education Policy 2020, which promotes a shift from rote learning to competency-based education focused on the development of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills.

Our Promotion & Assessment Policy is rooted in continuous, comprehensive, and inclusive evaluation methods, ensuring every child receives an opportunity to grow holistically.

1. Holistic and Multidimensional Assessment

  • We implement Holistic Progress Cards that reflect students' growth in cognitive (academic), affective (emotional and social), and psychomotor (skills and physical) domains.

  • Assessment includes academic performance, values, life skills, attitudes, and participation in sports, arts, and community activities.

2. Stages of Schooling (5+3+3+4 Model)

Stage Classes Assessment Focus
Foundational Pre-KG to Grade 2 Play-based, observational, activity-focused assessments
Preparatory Grades 3 to 5 Informal tests, quizzes, projects, oral/written expression
Middle Grades 6 to 8 Experiential learning, concept understanding, interdisciplinary approach
Secondary Grades 9 to 12 Competency-based exams, critical thinking, and application skills

3. Promotion Criteria

  • No Rote Learning: Promotion is not based solely on marks but on competency achievement and learning outcomes.

  • Continuous Evaluation: Students are assessed throughout the year using various tools—written tests, projects, peer reviews, self-assessment, and teacher feedback.

  • Supportive Remediation: Students not meeting expected learning levels are given additional support before re-assessment.

  • No Detention Policy (Grades 1–8): In line with NEP and RTE Act, we promote all students up to Grade 8 while providing continuous support for improvement.

4. Tools and Methods of Assessment

  • Formative Assessments (FAs): Daily classroom activities, discussions, worksheets, group work

  • Summative Assessments (SAs): Periodic exams to assess comprehensive understanding

  • Portfolio-Based Assessment: Collection of student work over time

  • Peer & Self-Assessment: Encourages reflection and responsibility for learning

  • Tech-Enabled Tools: Where applicable, we use digital platforms for quizzes, feedback, and tracking progress

5. Student Progress Tracking

  • Holistic Report Cards are shared twice a year, covering:

    • Academic achievements

    • 21st-century skills (problem-solving, communication, collaboration)

    • Well-being and socio-emotional development

  • Regular Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs) and digital updates ensure transparent communication with families.

6. Inclusivity and Flexibility

  • Assessments are child-friendly, stress-free, and adaptable to individual learning styles.

  • Special needs students are assessed with modified tools based on their Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

  • Multilingual assessments are encouraged where feasible, promoting the child’s mother tongue/local language.

7. Teacher Development and Training

All faculty are regularly trained in:

  • Competency-based learning and assessments

  • Designing rubric-based evaluations

  • Identifying and supporting diverse learning needs

Conclusion

At Jnan Jyoti, we aim to create lifelong learners who are confident, competent, and compassionate. Our assessment system is not just a tool for grading, but a process of growth, reflection, and transformation—aligned with the true spirit of NEP 2020.
